The Differences Between TIG and MIG Welding
The primary difference between MIG (metal inert gas) and TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding is that the former uses a consumable wire which melts when heated to pool on the surfaces being welded and create a join when the metal cools. TIG welding, on the other hand, uses a non-consumable source, a tungsten electrode. An arc of electricity is created between the tungsten and the pieces being worked on, and the resulting heat is used to fuse those metals as they melt to create a weld.
That’s the difference, in simplified terms. But which is better? Both have advantages and disadvantages, so which method is used depends on selecting the one that’s best for that particular application. Again, in brief, MIG welding is a fast, relatively easy process, making it suitable when the area to be welded is large. It’s also possible to use MIG on materials of considerable thickness. But because it’s done speedily, there tends to be less control and more spatter resulting from a MIG weld. TIG welding, on the other hand, is better suited to thinner metals. It’s a slower process, but that allows for more precision and can result in a smoother finish.
